Why is Tire Rotation Important?

Mechanic with Tires
You’ve likely been told as long as you’ve been driving that it’s important to rotate your tires. But what does rotating your tires do for them? Why rotate tires if they’re just going to get replaced with new tires eventually, anyway? Our service center staff likes to keep our Moline customers informed. So, we’ve put together the handy guide below on why tire rotation is so important, as well as how often to rotate the tires on your car.

Why Rotate Tires in the First Place?

So, why rotate tires? Tires can wear unevenly, and unevenly-worn tires are not safe for driving along our Rock Island streets. So, what does rotating your tires do? Tire rotation at the correct intervals evens out wear and tear, making the tires safer than they would be otherwise and allowing them to last longer.

What Does Rotating Your Tires Do for Them?

  • Regularly rotated tires last longer
  • Unevenly-worn tires can be dangerous on slippery roads or in an emergency.
  • Unevenly-worn tires on an AWD vehicle can cause undue strain on the drivetrain
  • Neglecting to rotate your tires could void your warranty

How Often to Rotate Tires

How often you should rotate your tires depends on whether you have an all-wheel drive vehicle. Here’s how often to rotate tires as well as how to do it, in case you’re considering doing it yourself:

4WD, FWD, and RWD Vehicles

  • How often to rotate tires: every 6,000 to 8,000 miles
  • Rotate the front driver side tire with the rear passenger side tire
  • Rotate the front passenger side tire with the rear driver side tire.

Dually pickup trucks (with four rear wheels)

  • How often to rotate tires: every 6,000 to 8,000 miles or every six months
  • Rear inside tire on the passenger side: transfer to front passenger side
  • Rear outside tire on the passenger side: transfer to the inside
  • Rear inside tire on the driver side: transfer to front driver side
  • Rear outside tire on the driver side: transfer to the inside
  • Front driver side tire: transfer to rear driver side outside
  • Front passenger side tire: transfer to rear passenger side outside

All-Wheel Drive Vehicles

  • How often to rotate tires: every 5,000 to 7,500 miles
  • Don’t do this yourself! Leave rotating tires on an AWD to professionals only.
