Why Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Tires, like all vehicle components, wear out, and they typically wear out unevenly. Your front tires’ outside edges will show more substantial wear, while the rear wheels wear down more evenly. That’s why if you don’t regularly rotate your tires, they will likely deteriorate at different levels, and you’ll have to buy a complete set of new tires sooner. Routinely rotating your tires when you’re supposed to will save you money in the long term. Most importantly, it will help keep you safer on Rock Island roads.

When to Rotate Tires

If you want to know when to rotate tires or how often should you rotate your tires, keep reading. Front and rear-wheel drive Chevy vehicles need their tires rotated about every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. All-wheel-drive cars should have their tires rotated about 3,000-5,000 miles. The reason AWD Chevys need their tires rotated more frequently is that all four tires are actively engaged at once. That can cause them to wear down faster. Always check your Chevy owner’s manual for specific recommendations for your particular model.

Proper Tire Positions When Rotating Tires

  • FWD Tires: When rotating the tires on FWD vehicles, move the front tires to the back of the car in the same left/right positions. However, when transferring the rear tires to the front, shift the right and left tire positions.
  • RWD Tires: When rotating RWD tires, do the opposite as above. Your rear tires should be carried forward in the same left and right positions. When you move the front tires to the rear, switch the tire positions.

How to Rotate Tires

For DIY tire rotation, be sure you have a car jack and a lug nut wrench handy. Once you have the tools you need, follow the simple steps below to rotate your tires:

  1. Set your parking brake as an extra safety precaution.
  2. Loosen all of the lug nuts on all of your wheels but don’t take them off just yet.
  3. Use your car jack to lift one wheel and place the jack stand underneath it.
  4. Remove all of the tires on your Chevy and inflate them to the recommended PSI, which you’ll find written outside of the tire. Once filled accurately, rotate your tires according to the instructions above for your kind of tires. Then, screw on the lug nuts by hand until snug.
  5. Lower your car from the jack stand and use the lug wrench to tighten and secure all of the lug nuts on all of your tires. Tire manufacturers recommend tightening the lug nuts diagonally from one to another in a star-like design.
