How to Prep a Car for Winter
The winter months are coming fast in Moline and beyond! While we at Green Family Chevrolet love skiing, gathering with family, and singing Christmas carols, we also recognize that winter comes with some unique driving challenges. Whether you’re just making your daily commute or taking the family on a long-distance road trip, there are plenty of ways to prepare so you can stay safe on the roads as the weather turns cold. The service team at Green Family Chevrolet has put together a guide outlining the nine most important winter car prep tips below – check it out!
9 Winter Car Prep Tips
- Check your battery. Cold weather puts a strain on your car battery, and can make it harder to start your car. Run a battery test and inspect the battery cables and terminals to make sure everything is working properly before winter weather comes.
- Check your tire pressure. The cold weather also causes your tires to deflate more than usual, so it’s important to check your tire pressure more often than usual. Underfilled tires drastically reduce your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and can lead to accidents on the road due to the lack of traction.
- Consider winter tires. If you plan on making long road trips or driving around in a lot of heavy snow and ice, consider adding winter tires to your vehicle. These unique tires have improved grip and give you increased control on the Rock Island roads.
- Regular brake checks. In addition to regularly inspecting your tires, you should plan to regularly inspect your brakes during the winter months. Frequent driving over wet roads and ice can cause premature rust on your brakes, which reduces their performance and efficiency.
- Check your coolant levels. Before the weather starts to get cold, make sure you have enough coolant in your radiator so your engine can run in top condition.
- Change your oil. Motor oil naturally thickens in colder weather, so make sure you schedule an oil change with Green Family Chevrolet at the start of winter.
- Replace your wiper blades. Snow, salt, and debris can all cause your wiper blades to wear down, so you want them to be brand-new at the start of the winter months. You should also replace your wiper fluid–consider adding freeze-resistant fluid for maximum performance.
- Top your tank off. Keep your fuel tank filled up constantly, since an empty tank causes moisture to build up and puts excess strain on your fuel pump.
- Check your heater. The most important thing you can do for your own comfort is to make sure your heating system is working properly before the weather turns cold!
